He is primarily known as one of the leading baritone saxophonists in jazz history – playing the instrument with a light and airy tone in the era of cool jazz – he was also a notable arranger, working with Claude Thornhill, Miles Davis, Stan Kenton, and others. Together with Miles Davis, Lee Konitz and others Mulligan was one of the legendary great man in Jazz who helped the new style of "Cool Jazz" come to life. During his long career he worked with almost all Jazz Giants of American music history and received countless awards such as the memberhship in the "Downbeat Hall of Fame" and a "Grammy".
