When Leah Collins met Steve Case at Lake Argyle in the remote Australian outback, it was a musical match made in heaven. Arriving at the laconic outback resort with its rich landscapes and postcard-perfect views, Collins was searching for a change of lifestyle, gaining employment in the remote community while Case, a “grey nomad in training” was travelling around the country in his van and playing music to anyone who would listen. When word got around that the local radio station was holding a “Jonny Cash Challenge” it was put to Collins and Case that they should get together and submit an entry. The makeshift recording of “Jackson” in a rusty tin shed at the back of the resort proved the catalyst in what has now become “Collins and Case”. Collins soon began singing regularly with Case during his nightly shows, with guests delighting in the waitress taking time out to get up on stage and belt out some tunes. While Case laments, tongue-in-cheek, that he arrived at the resort as an entertainer who cleaned boats occasionally but soon became a boat cleaner who sang a bit, such were his skills behind a bucket and mop. The pair quickly developed a strong musical connection with audiences appreciating their unique take on modern country and they subsequently recorded the “Helium Heart Ep”. Collins and Case will be back at Lake Argyle in 2015 and are hopeful success of the Ep will result in more singing and less waitressing/boat cleaning.
