Dubbed a "heroic-comic drama", Orlando paladino is in essence a send-up of 18th-century operatic conventions.
Most of the characters are ridiculous, from the love-crazed Orlando and the brainless, bicep-flexing King Rodomonte to Princess Angelica's lover, Medoro, whose dithering makes Mozart's Don Ottavio lookalike Indiana Jones. The sorceress Alcina tries various cures on Orlando before finally getting it right, while a servant pair, Pasquale and Eurilla, come and go with charming irrelevancy to the main plot.
As so often in Haydn's operas, the dramatic pacing can be dangerously leisurely. But much of the music is vividly inventive, above all the brilliant and heartfelt arias for Angelica (eloquently sung by Patricia Petibon) and the gleeful patter songs for the fast-talking Pasquale.
Markus Schäfer does these with splendid panache, while his fellow tenors Michael Schade and Werner Güra are equally good as Orlando and Medoro. Harnoncourt conducts with gusto and never misses a trick with Haydn's imaginative orchestration. Orlando paladino may be a challenge to a stage director, but it makes for delightful listening on disc.
