Udell is a man, much like irving berlin, without formal musical training. Unlike Berlin, Udell is not a lifelong a musician. The melody for his first song, "A California Girl," came in a dream. Udell was a lawyer for his professional life without musical ambitions or awareness of musicianship. In this respect, Udell's music career can be likened to that of Tony Cicoria, an established orthopedic surgeon in his 40s from upstate new york who embarked on a musical career, taking up piano and composing classical music, after being struck by lightning. Udell's lyrics have been likened to stephen sondheim, and his melodies to andew lloyd webber. Wary of George Gershwin's famous pronouncement that musical education will not corrupt native talent, Udell has studiously continued to march to the beat of his own muscial drummer. However, the talent around him on pieces included in this album are of the highest musical pedigree and quality, including broadway tenor Bill Brooks, vocalist on "Garden By the Sea" and incomparable songstress Alexis Cole on "Our Xanadu." along with the brilliant violinist Daisy Jopling, on both pieces.The authenticity of the instrumentation on these non -computer pieces shines through.
